I believe extreme loneliness turns to hopelessness. Hopelessness often leaves a hole that can easily be filled by evil. Evil often reveals itself in anger and hatred.

I think we've all known lonely people, especially in high school and college - where young adults can be unusually cruel. It's an age of both discovery and insecurity. The collision can change us forever - some being led to success, some to extraordinary failure.

I'm saddened by so many families who have lost so much in this tragedy. But I'm also sad that no one was able to reach out to this troubled soul and try to bring him back from the abyss.

Douglas,

You are so right word for word. It's often a sad reality that with the fast paced nature of American society, sometimes we often can't see those who need our help the most.

There is also growing debate as to the nature of how to handle individuals that exhibit the type of behavior this shooter certainly had shown... For many reasons, connecting the dots were hard because of the lack of communication with those that were involved such as law enforcement, the shooter's parents, gun shops, the school itself, and so on...

In the end, everyone lost, including the shooter himself...

I'm sorry Nicholas, but I have to disagree with where you are going with this. I cannot condone such actions by this shooter. Everyone gets lonely. I get lonely. I don't go out and start planning a massacre!!!

The shooter should have just shot himself, he had to go out and kill a bunch of people and die thinking that he would be glorified because of his killing manifesto.

Come on Joanne, I know you're angry, but let's not get so heated and forget that this kid wasn't just lonely, clearly this was a person that was troubled and mentally ill from the get go. If you have to blame him, then maybe you should also try to blame society who should have had more policies in place to get this kid some help.
