One of the most beautifully worded quotations that I often fall back on when talking about optimism comes from the great writer Helen Keller. She said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you will never see the shadow.”
It’s often one of the greatest lessons we can learn in life in order to live in a state of happiness, contentment, and alignment with the life that you were meant to live.
What happens to us when we turn the other way around? The answer is that we see the shadows. And in life, when you focus and turn your attention to the shadows you will never be able to see the light, the warmth, and the sunshine. It is the reality of life, that you either face the shadows or the sunshine, the choice of facing the sun is all up to you.
But when you take up the choice to face the sun, you will realize that in that optimism you have realigned yourself with life, happiness will flow, inspiration will come to you and ultimately that inspiration can be extended to others.
Now that’s what I call an exciting reality!

1i think it is a great quotation. if only we can stay focused on the sunlight and stop minding the shadows. sounds simple but not easy to do. especially for a pessimist like me. thanks for the quote anyway.

2Gibo,
It’s your first comment here, consider yourself a regular! Thank you for adding your perspective!
In all behavior, it takes repetition. Those who are successful do not need to consciously be optimistic, because they have developed the habit of expecting the best. One of the greatest thing we can learn is that optimism is something anybody can develop in their own lives. And that it is something that we must develop in order to realize our own potential.
But don’t worry, your response maybe what I would call the Raymond type of personality from “Everybody Loves Raymond”.. I’ve always called him the happy pessimist, because he was never happy unless he was worrying about something…

3Wonderful quote Nicholas! I think Helen Keller was just one of the most inspirational individuals to ever live. Talented in so many ways.
I think you’re right that we have to be optimists in approaching life.
