Top of the mornin’ to ya! It’s officially St. Patrick’s Day, a traditionally solemn and religious holiday, but has slowly been modernized and livened up a bit over the years. Let’s remember, however, the central individual in this celebration, and that is none other than St. Patrick himself.
St. Patrick was born in England, and at the age of 16 he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland. After 6 years of captivity, he was able to escape. He then started his studies at a monastery, during these years he realized that his true calling was to go back to Ireland to convert this Pagan land into Christianity.
St. Patrick succeeded in converting Ireland into Christianity, he did this for 30 years. He died on March 17, and that’s why we celebrate this day in honor of him.
Your True Calling
I think as individuals today, whether you’re a Christian or not, there is an overriding lesson we can learn from St. Patrick, and that is to always follow your calling. Not enough people listen to their gut feeling, and this is producing an epidemic of unsatisfied individuals among our population. If more people would follow their true calling, or maybe even start to contemplate what that calling is, I think we would have an even more happy population…
In this sense, we are like slaves.
So, don’t be a slave to your life. We may not all turn out to be saints, but at least we will be following our hearts and following our passion…
Courage
Another very important lesson that we learn is that it takes courage to follow your calling. It St. Patrick’s case, he was facing imprisonment and even death, just to convert Ireland to Christianity. And even though we don’t face that sort of dire situation in our own lives, there are those of us who cannot muster than courage to start moving in the direction of their true calling…
I hope you take heed of these lessons that St. Patrick has taught us, and start following your heart with regards to the road of your life…
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!
