It’s nearing Spring here in the Midwest and today will mark another day of above 50°F. And the sound of spring suddenly has you daydreaming of birds. And my mind drifted off into space and a hummingbird came to mind. It’s a wonder of nature, such a small bird, so fast, and beautiful to photograph as well…
Here are two poems that are dedicated to this wonderful bird…
The Hummingbird
by Harry KempThe sunlight speaks. And it’s voice is a bird:
It glitters half-guessed half seen half-heard
Above the flower bed. Over the lawn …
A flashing dip and it is gone.
And all it lends to the eye is this –
A sunbeam giving the air a kiss.
Ode to a Hummingbird
by Laurence OvermireLight shot through diaphanous wing
Fifty beats per secondIts long beak dipped in the flower of
Life’s sweet nectarToo fleet to see without an informative eye
A blur in the green gasp of forest needles
Yet when spied, delightThe happenstance of cat’s catching
Fate’s vivid colors dancingIn the rainbow shade
‘Twixt day and night.

1What a beautiful photo of the hummingbird! I’m in the Midwest, too. (Chicago) And you’re right, it has been gorgeous weatherwise last few days. Enjoy!
