For more than three years, ongoing violence has devastated the remote western region of Sudan known as Darfur. Conflicts between tribal militias have left over 400,00 dead and 2.5 million displaced, living in temporary camps where conditions are harsh and food is scarce. Fighting has reduced villages to ashes, crops to barren fields. The humanitarian crisis is only getting worse: 2,500 people die each week, the camps are full far beyond their capacity, and UN peacekeepers have been prohibited from intervening.
This is the state at which Darfur is at right now. Everyone knows about the crisis, but may not be aware of the extent to which it is at right now and for a long time now.
I was referred to an organization’s website by a friend of mine, and it’s most basic goal is to help the people of Darfur.
Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization that works to end poverty, hunger, and injustice. Working together with local partners in more than 120 countries, Oxfam provides practical assistance to help people overcome poverty, respond to disasters, and secure their rights.
Because we are not tied to any specific political, economic, or religious interests, we are able independently to develop, fund, and support effective programs that help people overcome poverty and secure their rights. Oxfam America is privately funded; we do not accept money from the US government or any other source that might limit the independence of our programs or policy decisions.
In Darfur, Sudan, three years of violence have left more than 3 million people–half the population of that region–dependent on international aid for survival. Oxfam is providing essential water and sanitation services to more than 500,000 displaced people in Darfur and neighboring Chad.
